October 11th…

Caramel Apple Delights

“Gooey caramel drips from my chin like that of the beard on an old man.”

The smell of fall is in the air! Crisp leaves! Hayrides! Football games! Sweaters coming out of storage! There is no better time than to visit an apple orchard. Apple orchards are wonderful places, full of the magic autumn naturally brings.

And of course, there is no better treat than making caramel apples at home! It’s very simple and the recipe today includes several dipping options for you to try!

Caramel Apple Delights

  • 6 popsicle or craft sticks
  • 6 red apples
  • 1 (14 ounce) package of individually wrapped caramels, unwrapped
  • 2 Tablespoons milk
  1. Remove the stem from each apple and press a craft stick into the top. Butter a baking sheet.
  2. Place caramels and milk in a microwave safe bowl, and microwave 2 minutes, stirring once. Allow to cool briefly.
  3. Roll each apple quickly in caramel sauce until well coated. A spoon is a great to tool to help you cover every last square centimeter of the apple. When the apple is well coated, place on the buttered baking sheet until caramel is set.
  4. After apples have been covered in caramel, but before they are set, you can choose to take it one step further and roll the caramel apples in a variety of toppings. Get creative or use one of our suggestions…
  • Mini chocolate chips.  Chocolate and caramel?  Oh yeah!
  • Crushed peanuts, pecans, or walnuts.  Honey glazed peanuts are a great option to roasted peanuts.  And pecans and walnuts have a magical ability to make the caramel apple taste like candy!
  • Popcorn.  Yes, popcorn!  Be sure there are no half-popped pieces or kernels before you coat the caramel apple.
  • Crushed pretzels.  There is just something about salty and sweet mixed together.

After you have drenched, drizzled, and decorated your apples and have allowed them to set a bit, they are ready to enjoy!

Caramel apples make a beautiful and thoughtful homemade gift too. Simply place the apples in cellophane bags or wrap in plastic wrap then tie closed with a piece of pretty ribbon, string, raffia, or fabric!
